My name is Jamie Lovern, and I am the owner of Coaches Outdoor Services. It's still hard to believe that I ended up becoming a business owner and professional landscaper because that was never part of MY original plan.
I grew up in Chesterfield, Virginia, and was raised by 2 hard working middle class parents. My dad built every home we ever lived in, and my mom designed them all. Each house was different, with one being contemporary, one colonial, and the last one a country ranch style. With each build came a beautiful landscape to follow. My mom had the vision, my dad had the know-how, and my brother and I ended up being the labor. I learned how to install flower beds, prune plants, cut grass, build fish ponds, mix mortar, and do every other thing you could do in a yard. At the time, working in our yard was nothing more than chores to make mom and dad happy, so I could go do what I really loved, play football.
I started playing football in the 3rd grade, and I kept playing till I was 30 years old. My high school career was good enough to earn me a full scholarship to Appalachian State University, and I did well enough there to be given an opportunity to play for the Carolina Panthers of the NFL. I would eventually end up in the Arena League, which is how I ended up in Texas. My plan was to play football as long as I could and then become a high school football Coach and teacher. I retired from football in 2005 and did just that. Over the next 10 years, I coached football, powerlifting, track, and strength and conditioning. I had achieved everything I said I would and became exactly what I'd said I'd be. We often think we are in control of our own lives, but we can be quickly reminded that God has the last word.
After a disappointing 2015 football season, our staff was relieved of our coaching duties; therefore, I would need to find a new place to teach and coach. As I was looking for a new job, spring was in full bloom, and I kept seeing neighbors asking for recommendations for landscapers on our neighborhood Facebook page. Most of them needed their grass cut, and I didn't have anything to do and definitely needed the extra pocket change, so I offered to help. I thought I would just mow a few yards, and that would be it, but I started getting recommended, and all of a sudden, I had more work than I could handle. It wasn't just cutting grass; I was trimming bushes, trees, installing landscapes, and doing all those things I had learned growing up in Virginia. Looking back, it's so clear that God had a plan, but at the time, I felt like my whole life was in turmoil. My search for a new coaching job wasn't producing opportunities that I thought were best for my family, and I started to worry we might be headed for financial trouble. Summer was almost over, and still, there was no new coaching job that I could get excited about. I prayed for God to please find me a new job so I could put food on the table, and he did. Be careful what you pray for because God always delivers.
I was blessed with another Coaching opportunity, but it wasn't coaching football. I had made enough money that summer to justify trying this landscaping thing a shot. I would now lead a landscape company, which I found was exactly the same as leading a football team. Teamwork, accountability, and overcoming adversity were all the same. A business is a team, and each member has a job and must be accountable to the other members to achieve a common goal. God had closed one door and opened another.
With the organization and motivation skills I had learned as a coach, combined with my family's love for landscaping, Coaches Outdoor Services was born. Here we are over a decade later, still making Fort Worth beautiful one yard at a time. I'm still coaching my team, and God has blessed us with more wins than losses. Yes, we are in the landscape business, but more importantly, we are in the people business. Over the years, we have installed landscapes for all types of different reasons. We have been called into yards because of marriages, divorces, births, deaths, buying the house, selling the house, and the list goes on. We become part of their lives, and they become part of ours. I'm so thankful for this opportunity, my team, and the service they provide. Call Coach and let's make your yard a winner!
